Ram
Gopal Varma is back to a biopic 'Killing Veerappan' after killing time
making some forgettable horror films, comedies and also few romantic
dramas. RGV may have lost his midas touch of 90's and early 2000s but he
still can keep you engaged with true stories. He can document real
incidents and sensational crime stories better than many. However
Killing Veerappan shows only flashes of brilliance of the master
filmmaker. Killing Veerappan is a long, boringly narrated movie about an
interesting incident.
A cop (Shiva Rajkumar) hatches a plan to bring Veerappan (Sandeep) out of the forest so that they could be able to kill him. This movie is about detailed planning of the cop who fails a couple of times in executing it and eventually succeeding in the last attempt.
Performances:
Shiva Rajkumar is good as the cop who doesn't mind to go out of the way and act unethical to complete his mission. He has given a fine performance. Sandeep Bharadwaj is authentic as the Veerappan. Lot of credit should go to his makeup artist and also to RGV casting him in the first place. Parul Yadav is alright but a lot of questions arise about her character and its significance in the real story. Yagna Shetty emotes well in the role of Veerappan's wife.
Technicalities:
Ram Gopal Varma would have made wonders with this film had he made this movie ten years ago. He is surely out of form is clearly out of touch which can be seen throughout the film. He hasn't focused on the core elements simply tried to highlight Shiva Rajkumar's character so that the film could appeal to his fans in Karnataka. Technically the film is not upto RGV's standards.
Loud BGM doesn't add tension to the scenes in spite of music director's honest attempts to make an impact. Cinematography is just okay. Locations are good. Editing could have been a lot better. Production values are strictly average.
Thumbs Up:
1 .Performances
2 .Dialogue
Thumbs Down:
1 .Lots of unwanted stuff
2 .No thrills
3 .Weak narration
Analysis:
Killing Veerappan is only about the 'killing' part of the notorious criminal. RGV skipped all those interesting incidents that made Veerappan what he was. The movie is only about the police operation behind the killing of Veerappan. The cop says it loud and clear that they should bring Veerappan out of the forest to kill him as it is almost impossible to do that while he is hiding in the woods.
Killing Veerappan is all about the police executing various plans to bring their man out of the jungle. For this a lady is employed to befriend Veerappan's wife Muthulakshmi. The plan goes haywire as Veerappan comes to know about the whole thing. Later the cop lures Veerappan out of the forest with AK 47 deal. Even that too doesn't go as planned and the final encounter is what we all know.
Killing Veerappan is all about the planning of police to get hold of the notorious criminal. There isn't any focus on Veerappan or any other characters. The narration is pretty flat without any thrills. Things get interesting only towards the end and as the titles roll on, any diehard fan of RGV would wish that this film was made at least a decade ago. This movie doesn't thrill or excite you but only gives you an idea of what 'might' have happened behind Killing Veerappan. it will be all time hit
Verdict: This Killing is not so Thrilling.
